What is an "exceptional player"?

Post by Tashur » November 17th, 2012, 1:00 pm

Skunkworks has spent more than an entire expansion as the #1 25-man 2-night guild in the US. This fortunately means we've had the privilege of being a first choice for a lot of great players looking for a great raiding environment who only need 2 nights a week.

Additionally, we keep a log of exceptional applications that are good but not quite good enough to try to squeeze them into the roster; we'll get in touch with them when a spot opens up for them.

This means that a lot of the time we are recruiting, "any exceptional player". We wanted to write a bit about what that means so that you don't waste your time or ours with an application that is very likely to be denied.

A large majority of our trials have one or more of the following attributes:
  • Former top-100 (top-50 or better preferred) guild experience (and quite a few from even more competitive guilds)
  • Standout logs that demonstrate excellent damage avoidance, high dps/healing numbers, excellent use of cooldowns, and an understanding of their class mechanics
  • A personal endorsement from a current or respected former raider with the guild
  • A notable contribution to the raiding community - bloggers, theorycrafters, etc
This isn't to say that you can't apply if you don't have one or more of these attributes, but when we say "exceptional player" we tend to be referring to people with one or more of the above. If you still feel you're an incredible player, then you can still feel free to app, but keep in mind that your application will have to be that much better to make up for what is missing, and we always evaluate every application with a skeptical eye.

All this, of course, is to protect and encourage a truly great raiding experience, with great players achieving incredible progression on only 2 nights a week.
